Nesting
“True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.” -William Penn
The inspiration:
When I was a little girl, one of my favourite parts of the day was getting tucked into bed at night. My childhood home was nestled in the forest and once the lights were out, all you were left with was the moon and the stars (and crickets in the summer)- Crawling into fresh sheets and heavy blankets, bedtime could have lasted an eternity and still not have been long enough- Especially if it meant receiving slow, soft feather touch on my face or a story sweetly whispered to me as my eyes fluttered shut.
Thinking back on it now, I realize my nervous system was delighted by this dreamy sensory experience and that down-regulation was key to having restful sleep.
Fast forward to present day me… After experiencing an unfortunate TBI, my sensory tolerance was reduced to dust. Sound, light, movement, smells… Basically the entirety of my existence became unbearable and constantly had my nervous system in a state of fight, flight or puke. Nausea was constant, because the world doesn’t stop when your brain is broken. Working with my wonderful therapist on my own healing, she asked me how I ground myself when things are getting too intense. I shared how I build a nest, that’s what I’ve done for as long as I can remember. So she helped me build a nest when I was going to be doing deeper work, and we kept adding little things to it until one day I laughed at how wonderfully, perfectly nourished I felt even after doing the deep, dark, sticky-icky work… And what was even better, is that someone safe was there with me in my nest, supporting integration back into the world. What a beautiful way to change the old story.
It was from this place, where I realized that nesting was something I could bring to others who needed a little extra care and nervous system nourishment- Whether you are doing the deep, dark, sticky-icky work, feeling under cared for, or just want to give yourself (or a loved one) a care-rich gift.
